"By descending down into the depths of the soul, and not primarily by a painful acquisition of many manual skills, the artist attains the power of awakening other souls."

This painting reminds me of the Stella Adler quote we learned two weeks ago in our Introduction to Drama Therapy class. "Life beats down and crushes the soul. Art reminds you that you have one."-Stella Adler I felt empathy for the man. There have been times in my life when I could do nothing more but cover my face and cry. I also noticed that it's hard for me to look at this picture because it addresses death and getting older. We are fragile creatures with deep emotions and many needs. The fact that it's an older man makes the painting that much more intense for me. But it's also these moments when a good cry or "catharsis" is just what the soul needs to deal with it, heal and move on.
